Boozilla@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Does anyone else here have lupus? Just got diagnosed and I am really scared/upsetEnglish1·10 months agoSorry to hear this.
An internet forum like Lemmy is not the best place for medical advice. Most diseases can vary significantly from person to person. Lupus comes in multiple forms. The musician Seal has a form of lupus, and he’s 61. Autoimmune disorders are very complicated, because the immune system is very complicated.
Your doctor should be able to give you guidance and “what to expect” type information. If there is a patient portal or email you can use, be proactive and reach out to your doctor with your questions. If you’re in the USA, patients very much have to actively navigate this stuff, and advocate for themselves. Your doctor might give you a pamphlet or booklet. Read it.

I don’t particularly want them to, and I certainly don’t want a “New Coke” Wikipedia. But the design is rather plain and “looks old” to a modern user.
And people are suckers for a friendly-looking starter like “Certainly!”

I have trying some of the better stuff from Aldi, but this was a crappy grocery store that just happened to be close to where we have game night, so I popped in and bought some for the group.
Boozilla@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the most petty/pointless/pedantic hill you're willing to die on?English1·11 months agoA few weeks ago I went to the grocery to buy a few chocolate bars. The guy in front of me had a bunch of stuff and I placed my chocolate on the belt wayyyyy behind his stuff in a little pile. To me it looked obvious that it was not part of his purchases. I didn’t even think of using the separator thing. I was very tired at the time and not paying much attention.
Of course…the cashier grabbed my candy and rang it up with his stuff. Dude in front of me nicely told her that those were not his. The cashier apologized, I apologized, and then the cashier started going through the corporate point-of-sale-obstacle-course of undoing the chocolate candy from his purchase.
At this point, the other customer was more than ready to get out of there, “Don’t worry about it. I don’t mind buying his chocolate and I really don’t have time for this.” Embarrassed, I apologized again. He said don’t sweat it, buddy and left.
I got a serious gangster vibe off the guy, too. I thought damn…did the mob just buy me chocolate?
So yeah…your idea could save a life!

Lemmy is missing:
- Bots
- Karma farmers
- Ads
- Insane mods
- Fucking Spez
You know you’re right, we’re nothing like reddit!!

Boozilla@lemmy.worldto Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•I was explaining to my daughter about the differences between Gimp and Photoshop and saw that Adobe had a page that claimed to compare the two. It never compares the two. It barely mentions Gimp.English0·1 year agoI truly hate how shit like Adobe and ProTools become the only acceptable software to use “inside the industry”. Plenty of independent self publishers use tools like Gimp and Reaper. But the velvet rope mindset refuses to accept that in certain circles.
Those same types of folks are the most likely to get replaced by AI. So maybe that will be some bittersweet Schadenfreude.

Bro, do you even index fund?
Boozilla@lemmy.worldto Out of the loop@lemmy.world•Why do all those US universities have dealings with Israel?English0·1 year agoI will try to be as neutral as I can, though it seems impossible in this space.
A lot of Jewish people live outside of Israel for reasons going way back in history, we won’t get into the details of that now. Many of them remain closely tied with family / community / culture / religious practices & beliefs in Israel. These folks are sometimes called the Diaspora.
Some of them live in the United States (and are US citizens) and some of them are very successful / influential. Like almost any other demographic group, some of them can be found on the boards of colleges and universities, corporations, etc.
And some of these folks are still very much invested in Israel and care about what is going on over there, like other folks in the Diaspora.
I hope that helps. I am not taking a side with this answer, just trying to provide some general context on the how we got here.
Boozilla@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•When/how do you think capitalism will be defeated?English1·2 years agoMy hope would be that we can transition peacefully to a hybrid model with the rising power of unions, gradual emergence of worker cooperatives, and increased demand for socialized health care and affordable housing.
However, I think it’s more likely that things will have to collapse first. Especially with violent accelerationist types doing their thing. Unfortunately, it’s far easier to destroy systems than it is to repair them.
Boozilla@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Salesforce Signals the Golden Age of Cushy Tech Jobs Is OverEnglish0·2 years agoInteresting read. I know someone who’s been a Salesforce consultant for several years. He was offered a job at Salesforce itself, but has chosen to hop around among different 3rd party firms instead. He makes an obscene hourly rate. Yet, every project he’s worked on has had serious problems, and quite a few have flopped. I get the impression a lot of consultants are kind of winging it.
I don’t know a lot about the Salesforce platform, but it seems like a lot of his clients want to customize the crap out of their implementation and not do things in the prescribed manner. I don’t know if this is just stubbornness and stupidity on the clients’ part, or lack of flexibility within the Salesforce software, or some of both.
Boozilla@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's a company secret you can share now that you no longer work there?4·2 years agoHealth insurance company I worked for would automatically reject claims over a certain amount without reviewing them. Just to be dicks and make people have to resubmit. This was over 25 years ago, but it’s my understanding many health insurers still pull this shit. They don’t care if it’s legal or not. Enforcement is lazy and fines are cheaper than medical claims.
Obviously this is in the USA.
Boozilla@lemmy.worldto You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK: If you're on Lemmy.World or Sh.itjust.works you should not subscribe to any Beehaw communitiesEnglish1·2 years agoIt’s important to note that the admins of beehaw are not happy about this solution, either. And they hope to refederate once they have better tools and enough mods / admins to deal with it.
They point wasn’t to shadowban, that was a side effect. The point was to protect their member–who specifically wanted a certain type of safe friendly instance–from hostile weirdos sending dick pics and stuff like that. Nobody’s happy with the situation, but it’s the best they could do under the circumstances with the resources they have.
I also don’t think it’s wrong for instances to have their own strong rules and preferences. This is one of the GOOD things about the Fediverse. The software features and how people use lemmy will catch up eventually.
As for the confusion / chaos around multiple/redundant/competing communities and so on…that will get better over time as people figure things out. Honestly it’s not that different than reddit with all of its splinter subs like “true-” whatever.
And all things Meta.
