Summary

Trump defended his new tariffs on Canada, China, and Mexico as a response to the fentanyl crisis, but experts say overdose deaths have already been declining due to law enforcement efforts and naloxone distribution.

Critics argue tariffs will harm trade and cooperation while failing to curb fentanyl trafficking, most of which occurs at the U.S.-Mexico border. Just 10 lbs were seized from Canada.

Canada and Mexico condemned the tariffs, with Mexico threatening countermeasures.

Experts say naloxone access and cartel crackdowns, not tariffs, are driving overdose reductions.

ah yes, lets impose tariffs so less stuff gets smuggled.

tariffs will only increase the amounts of smuggling and stuff being smuggled also has no quality assurances attached to it.

Trump and maga think the other countries pay tariffs from their own pockets directly to the US Treasury, hence the need for an External Revenue Agency.
      Just plain dumb.

From my understanding of the thought process (not “logic”, but a thought process), it’s like this: If we place tariffs on nations where we know smuggled goods are coming from, the economic impact of lost trade with the USA will cause them to enforce our border policies about what we allow in. It’s using force (the only language something like the current admin understands) to outsource labor.

Fentanyl took over a huge market share of heroine users that got their heroine taken away by the US. Their agreement to leave the Taliban in power included stopping heroine production in Afghanistan. More than 80% of the heroine was produced there.

The war on drugs itself is the reason for fentanyl addiction. And it’s led by the US.

So you’re saying there is a trade imbalance? This is exactly what my boy Trump is trying to address, you maple syrup hoarder.

INB4 Trump/Musk/RFK notice that “naloxone distribution” is a thing and abolish it, so fentanyl overdose deaths start going up instead of down.

I think it’s effectively Republican policy to be okay with letting Fentayl users overdose. They don’t want to solve the drug problem, because it only exists due to mismanagement of government to enable companies to profit off of it by prison labor.

If all drugs were decriminalized, a massive social program to destigmatize the users, and have government-ran areas to enable drug testing, needle exchanges, and welfare programs to get people out of stressful situations that make people turn to hard drugs in the first place, we’d kill the “drug epidemic” by the next administration.

Instead of doing any of that, or even legalizing weed for tax revenue, we’re going to arrest them all because putting the people in jail looks good on camera and re-election, instead of wanting to be human to fellow humans.

Wouldn’t surprise me to learn that donvict is just doing this to manipulate markets for oligarchs to take advantage of.

Or that he’s doing it because he hates the Chinese and Mexicans and because his wife wants to bang Trudeau.

Oh, another “Trump says [bullshit] but [yeah, it’s bullshit]”.

Look, I applaud that there are still heroic attempts to fact-check Trump but overloading our bs-detector is clearly his MO.

I think it’s safe to assume that everything he says is a lie or at least a huge exaggeration and save some energy to try and build up some resistance to what he’s freaking doing

The only way to address the drug problem is for the government to sell a clean supply of whatever drug you want, at cost, with access to addiction treatment.

But that would mean millions of cops losing their jobs.

Ok, so US should be happy that Canada enacted tariffs to curb US smuggling drugs and guns into Canada.

It was never about Fentanyl for Canada. Such a red herring. Donny boy is such a liar . It was his way to try and get around the free trade agreement which he signed and said was the best free trade agreement. No country should ever trust the US again.

I’m pretty sure the reason is not the reason. Personally I feel like this excuse is just a push to tank smaller businesses so they can either fail altogether or be sold dirt cheap to the biggest corporations to eliminate competition and also fill the pockets if the biggest companies with even more useless money. Same thing for housing, push people out so companies can buy up as much land as they can.

I feel like people are trying to read too far into Trump’s intentions. He doesn’t even know what a tariff is, he just knows that it hurts someone, and being a bully that’s all he wants to do. He’s just trying to throw his weight around and make people notice him, and it’s working.

With everything going on, I’m surprised overdoses are going down. Hell, I’m considering taking up drugs to help deal with it all
