Example of a user not being able to see posts because of incorrect language settings configuration: https://feddit.org/post/8656952
This has been fixed in version 0.19.9, but if your instance is running an older version that that, make sure to check that in your account language settings (the checklist, not the interface language):
- all the languages you speak are selected (for instance, Undetermined and English)
- or that you don’t have anything selected (in that case, you are going to see all the languages)
Selecting a language is done by Ctrl + Click on a desktop
This is a problem with Lemmy’s defaults. Every single post has to be set as English, instead of allowing the user set a default language.
It’s not the fault of the user. It’s a bug. I just checked and no, I cannot set a default language for my posts. If they want to fix the viewing problem long-term, they need to fix this default posting language problem first.
If anything, I’m annoyed at the amount of foreign language posts that don’t tag their actual language.
How do you tag a language
If you’re on the standard web interface, you can select the language whenever you make a post. If you’re using an app, this would be app-specific.
I wish there was a way to auto tag your posts as a language. 99.99% of my comments will be English. I should t have to pick English from the stupid drop down.
Also from what I’ve seen most apps just ignore language all together.
Communities can be configured to only allow one language
This is a setting communities can enforce i believe
So far the only time I’ve encountered that is forcing no language to be set which is obnoxious.
Indeed. Probably something we can raise every time we see it
I wonder if it’s English, or American English 😅
(Thank you for the tip by the way I had no idea!)
I’m in jerboa, I don’t see this seeing. Is this something I should just do on a PC?
Yes, unfortunately
Thanks. Mine were wrong.
Happy to help
Thank you so much. I didn’t know about this and I just assumed that was a federation error or something like that. I never would’ve thought that it was because of my settings 🫠
